Rumney scored three tries to Bonymaen's two but lost out on the scoreline as the home side mounted a spirited defence in the face of gale force winds. Bonymaen went ahead with a try from wing Paul John and three penalties by centre Peter Roberts. Rumney hit back with a try from centre Nick Stork who characteristically cut through between the opposition centres to touchdown. Stork then switched to scrum half in place of Glyn Welsh who was unable to continue because of injury. Early in the second half Bonymaen scored a vital try when flanker Andy McPherson crossed and Roberts added the conversion. In the final quarter Rumney became dominant and scored two fine tries, the first from centre David Willey following excellent work by fellow threequarters Mark Addis and Martin Cawley and the second a solo effort from a tap penalty by lock Paul Langley. Matthew Silva converted both tries, one with a spectacular kick from the touchline, but when it seemed likely that Rumney would snatch victory, time ran out and referee Reg Hughes (Tredegar) blew for the end of the game.
Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney
RFC : "A good performance, the boys played well. Bonymaen
defended strongly against the elements and the try they scored
early in the second half was the game's turning point. We missed
Glyn Welsh's scrum half skills when he was injured but it was
nice to see a lot of youngsters getting the chance to play in
the first team."
Michael Peard, Captain Rumney 1st XV : "Our set piece work was outstanding, both at scrum and lineout and we stole plenty of ball but we also gave away a lot of penalties which Bonymaen successfully kicked. We continued to give away penalties in the second half and although we came back strongly we just ran out of time. Gerald Cox, Wayne O'Connor and Neil Coles all had excellent games."
Simon Greedy, No.8 Rumney 1st XV : "We did a lot of things right but we also did plenty of wrong things too. Basically it was bad luck that cost us the victory. The lineout and scrummage went well and we were good with the ball in hand, especially the back row but mistakes lost the game for us."
