Rumney went down to Carmarthen in torrential rain by a score of twenty points to three. As early as the second minute Quins fly-half Giles Thomas put the visitors' defence under pressure with a high kick that led to scrum half Emyr Jones scooping up the ball and racing through for a try which was converted by Thomas. Rumney outside half Matthew Silva replied with a penalty. Carmarthen were presented few scoring chances but just before half time a series of forward drives resulted in a try for Allan Mason. In the second half Jones kept his side going forward but could rarely break through a strong Rumney defence and it was only in the closing minutes that Thomas kicked a penalty for Quins and No.8 Phil Middleton scored their final try.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A very tough encounter, against a side who defended very well. We put a lot of pressure on Carmarthen but they held out. Credit must be given to the Rumney squad, they played well and the score does not reflect the game. Both sides tried to play rugby but the weather conditions would not allow it. For Rumney loose head prop Gerald Cox was voted Man of the Match."
