Scorers for Merthyr : Chris Perry try, Richard Williams try

Scorers for Rumney : Glyn Welsh try, Matthew Silva 2 penalities

Outside half Matthew Silva's last minute penalty goal gave Rumney their long-awaited first league victory over Merthyr at The Wern. In an exciting game, played in atrocious conditions, the visitors started well and dominated the forward exchanges for much of the game but were initially unable to get through the Merthyr defence. The first try came from Merthyr right wing Chris Perry who intercepted a loose pass to run fifty metres to score and this was followed by a second try when the home side's scrum half Chris Perry charged down a clearance kick, gathered the ball and won the race to the touch down. The finest forward movement of the game saw Rumney advance up the field through a series of well controlled phases towards the Merthyr line and finally scrum half Glyn Welsh dashed over to score the important try. Silva sealed the game with the winning penalty moments before referee Peter Rees blew for full time.

Shaun Lee, Rumney RFC 1st XV Coach : "The game was played at an intense pace on what can only be described as a glue pot pitch! Both sides tried to play expansive rugby and it proved to be an entertaining game. I thought that the final result was justified considering the amount of pressure we exerted. This will go a long way to build confidence amongst the squad. It is never easy to win at Merthyr and the record book will show that we have never been successful until this game. Man of the match for Rumney was Scott Eggar who had an immense game at number eight.."

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "I thought the best side won. The forwards played very well and the victory will also give the backs a boost in confidence. A well deserved win."
