Rumney's rise up the First Division table continued with this spectacular victory, becoming only the third side to win at Pontypool Park this season. Pooler were rocked in the first minute when centre Nick Stork burst through their threequarter line and supporting flankers Wayne Murphy and Anthony Moore set up the opening try for scrum half Glyn Welsh. The home side's outside half Ben Jeffries replied with a penalty goal but from a line out Rumney No.8 Simon Greedy set up a ruck in midfield from which Gavin Samuel released centre Mark Addis on a devestating break which ended with the centre passing back to his outside half to score under the posts. Within a few minutes Addis was scoring a try himself following another elusive break through the Pontypool defences and shortly before half time Rumney right wing David Willey added his side's fourth try when a Pontypool attack broke down in the visitors' twenty two and the winger dribbled the ball the length of the field and won the touch down. Trailing by 31 points to 3 at the interval, the home side put in a typically powerful second half performance wich resulted in a try for lock Cae Treharne, two for winger Chris Batsford and brilliant individual score by fullback Sione Tu'ipulotu. After an exhausting eighty minutes Rumney's first half tries saw them through for a famous and well earned victory.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A superb first half performance of continuity rugby gave us a commanding lead. The squad played to their potential and Pontypool could not get into the game. The second half was won by Pontypool but a very committed Rumney defence enabled us to achieve this fully deserved victory and take the three points. Man of the Match for Rumney was Simon Greedy. We now look forward to our game against Llandovery on Tuesday."
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC 1st XV Team Manager : "A wonderful first half performance showing the capability of the side. We defended well in the second half when Pooler were much more organised but Rumney were worthy winners."
