Scorers for Rumney : Christian Wills try, Matthew Cawley try, Matthew Silva 4 penalties and 1 conversion
Scorers for Abercynon : Craig Williams try, Gareth Turner try, Stuart Davies 3 penalties and 1 drop goal
Brilliant place kicking from outside halves Matthew Silva and Stuart Davies dominated this game and resulted in a hard fought draw. At half time Rumney had a narrow lead after Christian Wills had outpaced the Abercynon defence to touchdown a well placed Gareth Downes kick ahead and Matthew Cawley had finished off a superb three quarter movement which had seen Wills, Nick Stork, Gareth Downes and Jason Fofana tearing through the opposition to put the winger clear. Abercynon's outstanding back, full back Craig Williams, replied with a very good try and the visitors took the lead after winger Gareth Turner also scored a try but Matthew Silva brought the teams level again with a well struck penalty. Davies was again on target with the boot but two forty metre penalties from Silva sealed the draw.
Shaun Lee, 1st XV Coach Rumney RFC : "The game was evenly contested and a very entertaining one for the spectators. The Abercynon team achieved a notable victory last week against Dunvant so we knew they would come to us as a very confident side, containing a large number of experienced players. I was very pleased that the Rumney side pulled together and played some attractive rugby. They will gain confidence from this performance and become a very formidable side. Fullback Christian Wills played very well but once again Wayne Oconnor stole the show with a great display and was awarded Man of the Match."
Dave
Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Overall it was a
game that both sides will say they should have won. I think a
draw was a fair result. There were not many missed opportunities
and the goal kickers were superb. The Rumney back division is
the best we've had for years, they are superb at times, very exciting
and a lot of credit must go down to the coaching. I believe that
when we do get it together for the full eighty minutes some sides
will suffer heavy defeats at our hands. Man of the Match - Wayne
O'Connor."
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC 1st Team Manager : "A right gutsy performance against a much bigger pack and with two of our regular second rows out with injuries, a thoroughly deserved draw. The game could have gone either way - the Rumney side is still an experimental one and this augurs well for the future. Wayne O'Connor was outstanding."
Mike
Peard, Captain Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A game we should have
won. When we moved the ball out wide we looked very dangerous
- Jason Fofana, Nick Stork and Christian Wills really cut up the
Abercynon defence. Rumney missed a few opportunities and there
is room for improvement. The front five need to settle down and
put their authority on the scrum. We also need to guarantee line
out and set piece possession."

Matthew Silva, Outside half Rumney RFC 1st XV : "It was a good game but there were some mistakes and we need to work on our platform. The forwards worked hard and fortunately we got something out of it in the shape of a draw. We are still getting together as a team and if we can keep winning while we are settling, we'll be good enough to compete with anyone in the division."
Nick Stork, Centre Rumney RFC 1st XV : "The final result was disappointing because there were so many encouraging things from our perspective. We are not quite fully clicking as a team and when we do, someone's going to really be on the receiving end."
