Scorers for Rumney : Martin Cawley try, Matthew Silva 2 penalties and 1 penalty
Scorers for Aberavon : Jason Hyatt try, J.Davies penalty
An outstanding early defensive display led to Rumney defeating a powerful Aberavon side in this exciting and entertaining game at Riverside Park. The visitors made a strong start as their huge pack laid siege to the Rumney line but the home defence held firm and gave Rumney the confidence needed to take charge of the forward encounters. A quickly taken tap penalty from elusive scrum half Daniel Hawkins saw Aberavon hooker Jason Hyatt cross for the opening score but Rumney replied with a stunning try. The home forwards gained lineout possession with an excellent take by second row Grant Harrington and set up a series of six consecutive rucks which saw Anthony Wilkshire, Anthony Moore and Adrian Wainwright take play far upfield before centres Mark Addis and Ray Clark released left wing Martin Cawley to fly over in the corner for an outstanding try. Matthew Silva converted from the touchline and during the game added two further penalties to prove the difference between the sides.
Shaun
Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV :"A very good performance
from the whole squad, the boys defended extremely well against
a very capable Aberavon side. This victory was fully deserved
and will go a long way to inject some confidence amongst the squad.
The Rumney pack put in a most disciplined performance with the
front five very solid and a superb back row performance. The backs
played their part in an organised defense that stopped Aberavon
playing. The award of Man of the Match went to Paul Langley who
put in a huge performance and in the absence of captain Mike Peard
led his forwards very well. It was also particularly pleasing
to see the return of Keith Lee at scrum half, his sabbatical now
completed !!!."
Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "The best performance of the season from Rumney without a doubt. Some people thought it was only a formality for Aberavon to turn up and win today but our front five was absolutely outstanding and never gave an inch. The Aberavon front row was much larger than ours but we dominated them throughout and even though they made changes our props stuck to at it from start to finish. Wayne O'Connor and Anthony Moore had excellent games, the Man of the Match was Paul Langley."
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC 1st XV Team Manager : "In my opinion the score flattered Aberavon! Apart from the initial ten minutes of each half, the Rumney pack were dominant and the back row were brilliant, Wayne O'Connor's workrate was remarkable and Anthony Moore's tackling was outstanding."
Ian Riby, Rumney RFC : "A very good game. Aberavon's pack have a big reputation and from the kick off they were driving and peeling off very effectively, but the Rumney back row was brilliant and our defence was excellent. Our good forward performance was the basis of a fine victory. Everyone is frightened out of their skin when Christian Wills gets hold of the ball and starts running at them! Matthew Silva's touchline conversion was superb and I was very impressed with Mike Sheehan at prop, in fact the whole front row was excellent."
