Rumney's recent run of fine form continued and they moved into fifth position in Division One with this tough victory over visitors Blackwood. The home side played with the strong wind in the first half and used the elements wisely to keep Blackwood pinned deep in their own territory for much of the opening period and when Scott Eggar took the ball at the end of a Blackwood lineout the No.8 passed on to supporting flanker Wayne O'Connor who supplied the ball to Anthony Moore to set up the second phase. From the quick ruck, scrum half Glyn Welsh fed prop Gerald Cox who burst through a number of tacklers to score under the posts. Outside half Matthew Silva converted. Rumney's second try also came from a lineout. Lock Paul Langley gathered and the forwards set up a rolling maul from which prop David Smith powered over for the try. The second half saw Blackwood come back strongly as outside half Matthew Jones kicked cleverly with the wind and landed two penalties. Matthew Silva put the game out of the visitors reach with an excellent penalty, kicked against the wind. Shortly before the final whistle blew Blackwood flanker Dai Tomsa crossed for a try.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "This game should have been secured in the first half. If we had turned pressure into points on a number of occasions then we would have been well in front but because we didn't, we gave Blackwood a chance to get back into the game. When we went down to fourteen men we had to raise our game. The team responded very well and we fully deserved the three points. Once again Wayne O'Connor had a fine game but he was pipped at the post for Man of the Match by Gerald Cox."
