Scorers for Rumney : Lee Meredith try, Matthew Silva drop goal and 4 penalties.

Scorers for Bonymaen : P.John try, N.Bonnan try, A.Davies try, P.Roberts try and conversion.

A last minute try by Bonymaen flanker Alun Davies gave the visitors an exciting 20-20 draw at Riverside Park. Rumney had played very well, scoring a try through wing Lee Meredith and out outside-half Matthew Silva kicking four penalties and a drop goal, but Bonymaen's forward drive and touchdown in the final seconds meant that the home side had to settle for the draw.

A Matthew Silva penalty on 79 minutes seemed to have secured victory for Rumney but an injury to lock Paul Langley gave the visitors enough time to plan a final attack which led to Davies's late score.

Rumney started the game strongly and a stunning break by full back Christian Wills put winger Lee Meredith in for a try after only fifty seconds. Bonymaen immediately hit back with Adrian Killa taking a quick, tapped penalty and delivering a try-creating pass to winger Paul John. Outside half Silva, who has added stability to the Rumney backline, hit back with a neatly taken drop goal before Bonymaen's Peter Roberts brought the sides level again with a penalty goal in the twentieth minute.

Bonymaen looked to use their talented backline whenever possible but Rumney's defence was sound with centre Ray Clark and flanker Wayne O'Connor breaking down the attacks. Silva added three penalties for Rumney to increase the home side's lead before Bonymaen started their late rally. Nicky Bonnan's converted try brought the visitors back into the game but Silva then kicked his fourth penalty. Bonymaen reorganised and with Simon Davies now at outside half, launched the final attack which resulted in Alun Davies's point saving try.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "The performance was much improved from the previous week against Glamorgan Wanderers. The forwards worked very hard to produce a good platform and although we played without second row Mike Peard, his understudy Grant Harrington played very well and shows great promise for the future. The captaincy was given to Simon Greedy who led the side very well. Hooker Dean Simons played an important role along with the rest of his forwards in this very hard fought contest. We knew that Bonymaen would be a difficult side to beat, they like to play an expansive game and look to counter attack from any area of the field. We defended very well notably in the middle of the park and our back row was outstanding, I did feel that had we turned pressure into points then we would have secured a good victory. At the base of the scrum Glyn Welsh had a fine game and was awarded Man of the Match."

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "It's a game that we should have won but it was still a tremendous performance after last week's defeat at Glamorgan Wanderers. We took the park with a much changed side from last week's and the young players did us proud. There were two clear opportunities to score tries and we missed a number of kicks which would have usually gone over, so Bonymaen's injury time try was particularly disappointing."

Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC 1st Team Manager : "A gutsy performance and it would have been a big injustice if we had lost. The loss of Paul Langley through injury was a sad blow but on the positive side there were very good performances from Grant Harrington, Wayne O'Connor and Ian Spence - they all had fine games."

Ian Spence, centre Rumney RFC 1st XV : "It was fast flowing, end to end stuff but Rumney chucked it at the end. I felt that the game wasn't going to finish until Bonymaen scored."

Lee Meredith, wing Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A fast game with a lot of running. I found it very enjoyable apart from the last five minutes - we dominated the first 87 minutes !"
