Scorers for Rumney : Ian Higgins 2 tries, Gerald Cox try, Matthew Silva 2 conversions
Scorers for Dunvant : James Baker try, Mark Thomas conversion and 2 penalties
A superb display in driving rain, swirling winds and thick mud saw Rumney run in three fine tries to defeat second placed Dunvant at Riverside Park. Former Wales Schools centre Ian Higgins scored two tries and prop Gerald Cox added the third crucial touchdown. Referee Paul Adams (Ebbw Vale) showed excellent control and made a major contribution to a game which was entertaining and exciting despite the muddy conditions and torrential rain. Dunvant scored the first try of the match through an elusive break by centre James Baker who touched down under the posts. Mark Thomas converted. Rumney replied with Ian Higgins' first try. When a Dunvant attack broke down on the Rumney twenty two Captain Michael Peard was fed the ball and raced upfield before drawing the defence and passing to Mark Addis who set up the threequarter movement which saw Ian Higgins score his first try for Rumney. Shortly afterwards a similarly devestating break by lock Paul Langley created Higgin's second touchdown. Outside half Matthew Silva converted both tries to give the home side a 14 - 7 lead at half time. After the interval Dunvant came back to within one point through two Mark Thomas penalties but Rumney sealed their victory with a forward drive which led to Gerald Cox's well taken try. With Mike Peard leading the pack and half backs Silva and Glyn Welsh firmly in control, Man of the Match Wayne O'Connor led a number of bursts into the visitors' twenty two and kept play there until Paul Adams blew the final whistle.

Man of the Match Wayne O'Connor

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "This game was played in atrocious conditions but both sides tried to play rugby. It is plain to see why Dunvant are riding high at the top of the table, they are a good side but on the night we came through and proved we can play against and beat the best. The squad had to dig deep to record this victory and it will go a long way to boost their confidence. We deserved to take the three points after scoring three very good tries. It was difficult to choose one person as Man of the Match but the decision went in Wayne O'Connor's favour. We look forward to playing Cardiff and District on Tuesday night in a celebratory game for the club's 50th Anniversary."

Nigel Bezani, Coach Rumney RFC : " This was a great win, brilliant. Rumney showed a lot of real commitment and we ground it out in the end. It was nice to see a front row player getting a try ! "

Gerald Cox, prop Rumney RFC 1st XV : "I was surprised the game went ahead, it was so wet and muddy ! We dominated Dunvant in the scrums and were evenly matched in the lines out but our forwards outplayed theirs and in the end the best team won. My try was a long time coming, last season at Ystrad Rhondda I had seventeen tries so I was very pleased to grab my first try for Rumney. I hope that has opened the door for many more tries ! "
