Superb tackling by the Rumney defence and flair in attack made Swansea battle all the way to take their place in the last sixteen of the WRU Principality Cup. The Swansea pack contained five full internationals and in the opening exchanges they kept things tight and adopted the tactic of driving up the middle of the park whenever they had possession. The well organised Rumney defence tackled ferociously and broke down wave after wave of attack from the visitors. The first try for the All Whites came ten minutes into the half when Hywel Jenkins and Sililo Martins combined to put winger Richard Rees in. Following further forward pressure Swansea outside half Cerith Rees jinked through for a well taken try which he also converted. Rumney opened their account after half an hour with a brilliantly taken drop goal by full back Christian Wills. The outstanding try of the match also came from the home side when after forty minutes play centre Mark Addis made a stunning break which shattered the Swansea defence and set up the try for the supporting Christian Wills. Matthew Silva converted to give a half time score of 10 -12.

Five minutes into the second half influential Rumney scrum half Keith Lee was sin-binned and the visitors capitalised on his absence to create tries for Cerith Rees and Hywel Jenkins, both converted by Rees. The Swansea forwards tightened up their play and made it increasingly difficult for the home side to gain possession. Further tries came from Jenkins, Shaun Payne, Matthew Robinson and David Weatherly to secure Swansea a seventh round tie with Pontypridd at Sardis Road.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "First of all I would like to thank the committee and volunteers who worked very hard to enable the game to go ahead. The organisation on the day produced a great afternoon out for all those that attended. The game was a typical cup encounter, we showed a great deal of tenacity in defence and when we took them on we gave them a few problems. On reflection, if Matthew Silva had been successful with his attempted drop goal then we would have been leading at half time, who would have thought that ? !!!  When we lost a player early in the second half due to a sin bin offence Swansea ran in a few tries. The squad can feel very proud of themselves, Swansea didn't have it all their own way and they had to work hard for their victory. We now need to focus on our league programme. Man of the Match for Rumney was Christian Wills."
