Two Mark Shepherd tries scored in the first ten minutes gave Treorchy an early lead that even a powerful second half fight back by Rumney could not overturn. The Treorchy centre's tries came from a period of forward pressure that stretched the home side's defence. Rumney hit back with a fine try by left winger Ian McIntyre but the visitors added a third try after thirty minutes when captain Gavin Owen was driven over the line for a touchdown. At half time Matthew Silva was introduced at centre for Rumney and his involvement led to a brilliant try by right wing Lee Meredith and shortly afterwards his twenty metre spin pass put flanker Simon Greedy in under the posts. With a possible victory in their sights Rumney pounded the Treorchy defence but ran out of time and were unable to haul back the visitors' lead before the final whistle blew.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A very disappointing first half performance which allowed Treorchy to gain a strong foothold on the game. We didn't start performing until the second period. We started to play with more confidence in that half but we must not allow the opposing team to take the initiative and move so far ahead. It was very encouraging to see last year's youth team captain Neil Coles have his first full outing in the first team."
