Scorer for Rumney : Matthew Silva 3 penalties
In their second league game of the season Rumney went down to a powerful Aberavon side at the Talbot Athletic Ground. The strong wind played an important part in deciding the game and having chosen to play with the elements in the first half, the visitors faced a difficult struggle when they turned around 13 - 6 down. Aberavon's first try came after only two minutes when a blind side break by scrum half Owen Rutley led to a score in the corner by full back Ricky Price. Rumney hit back with two Matthew Silva penalties but ten minutes before half time Rutley started another threequarter movement which ended with Price touching down for his second try. Rumney exerted heavy pressure on the home side's line and a blind side move by Silva saw winger Martin Cawley put flying prop Lotu Ngnungutau over for what seemed a good try, only for play to be called back for a forward pass. A penalty by Jamie Davies gave Aberavon their 13 - 6 half time lead which was increased shortly after the break when Rutley broke away from a scrum for an individual try which was followed by a further try from winger Darren Griffiths. Matthew Silva and Jamie Davies exchanged penalties and a strong series of attacks saw Rumney threatening the Aberavon line but they were unable to gain any further scores before Huw David blew the final whistle.
Neil
HennessyShaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "This was always going to be a huge challenge - Aberavon on their own patch. I very much feel that the score does not reflect the game. We took the game to Aberavon and if we had turned pressure into points in the first half we could have been well ahead at the turnaround. I was very disappointed at losing our loose head prop so early in the game as he was the victim of an off the ball incident which can only be described as thuggery. I do not feel there is a place in the game for this and I am sure the individual concerned will be found out during the season and treated accordingly. The squad should be congratulated for their discipline and the effort they put into this game. We now move to our next match on Wednesday against Cross Keys. Man of the Match for Rumney was Neil Hennessy."
