Carmarthen Quins' impressive home record came to an abrupt end as Rumney inflicted only the second home defeat of the season at Carmarthen Park. The visitors demonstrated too much speed and intensity for the home side, who were forced into giving away turnovers time and time again. Rumney prop Lotu Ngungutau tore holes in the best defence in the division with his charging runs in the loose and centres David Willey and Shane McIntosh created skillful breaks in midfield which the Quins struggled to stop. Winger Ian McIntyre got Rumney's first try seven minutes into the game after Ngungutau had set up the maul from which the threequarters were released. Carmarthen centre and captain Emyr Jones replied with a try but shortly before the interval Willey and McIntosh combined to put Rumney captain Andrew Grabham in under the posts.

Leading 5 -14 early in the second half, the visitors were denied a try when Ngungutau once again shattered the opposition defence with a long, charging run but could not link with his support because Quins lock Paul Matthews had tackled the man without the ball and was sent to the sin bin by Mr Soroka (Ystradgynlais), who refereed the game in admirable fashion throughout. Outside half Gareth Cleaver, who was in excellent kicking form all evening and also made a number of devestating solo breaks, slotted the penalty. Shortly afterwards, powerful running by McIntosh saw him crash over for a corner try and just before the final whistle Rumney completed a brilliant performance with the most spectacular try of the game. Full back Christian Wills and flanker Wayne O'Connor combined near their own goal line to set loose centre Willey who passed on to Nick Wakley for the winger to sprint to the Carmarthen posts. Cleaver converted the try, as he had the previous three, to give Rumney their first win at Carmarthen Park and the satisfaction of having turned in a particularly decisive and controlled performance.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A very accomplished performance from the squad, a fully deserved victory against a side who are enjoying a good season and are lying third place in the league. I felt the foundation for this win came from our solid defence which put Carmarthen on the back foot and enabled us to play an expansive game. I was once again very pleased with the squad players who started the game, they took their chance and played very well. It was interesting to note that the oldest player in the Rumney side was twenty four ! Once again the platform the forwards produced allowed the backs the opportunity to express themselves and play some great rugby. It was a very difficult decision to choose the winner of the Man of the Match award as there were a number of candidates but once again flanker Wayne O'Connor was the recipient. We now look forward to our final game of the season, against Bonymaen on Saturday."

Lotu Ngungutau, prop Rumney 1st XV : "It was a good game and I enjoyed it. Every player got into it and with our pack being on top I had a lot of runs. We were doing so well up front that we won a lot of turnovers and that gave the backs plenty of ball to score tries."

Roger Leyshon, Rumney RFC : "A fantastic performance and I wonder what else I have missed during the year. This was the finest game I have seen this season, Rumney's backup play was second to none, the support work was tremendous and the line kicking was excellent. All he players were looking for work and credit must go to the coaches who saw all their work come together this evening."

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "The best all round display since we have been in Division One. The boys attacked and did not just rely on defensive work. There was no attempt to close the game down and the last try started on our own goal line. All the players attacked all the time !"
