Scorers for Rumney : G.Cleaver try, M.Armstrong conversion
Scorers for Cross Keys : P.Watkins try, M.Lovell conversion and penalty
Rumney went down to a narrow defeat in an exciting game played in atrocious conditions at Pandy Park. Playing into strong wind and rain Rumney coped well with the conditions and dominated most of the first half. The forwards continually drove through the Cross Keys defence and took the lead when scrum half Gareth Cleaver caused confusion at the base of a scrum and dived onto a loose ball to score the opening try of the game. Matthew Armstrong converted. Conditions changed at half time and Rumney found themselves playing into the elements for both halves. Shortly after the interval Martin Lovell kicked a penalty for the home side and Paul Watkins took them into the lead when he took advantage of confusion in the visitors' defence to cross for a try. Lovell kicked an excellent conversion from the touchline. Rumney almost stole the points in the last minutes of the game when flanker Neil Coles was held up inches short of the line but the Keys held on to win.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "The game against Cross Keys was played in dreadful conditions but overall I felt that we played very well and deserved to have come away with a victory. We played some good rugby and showed a lot of character. We applied a great deal of pressure during the first half with the elements against us and deserved our slender lead. The second period saw us pressurise the opposition but we were unable to add to our score. We made a couple of errors in the second half and allowed Cross Keys the opportunity to snatch a victory. Man of the Match for Rumney : Grant Harrington ."
