Scorers for Llandovery : N.Clapham 2 tries, T.Lewis try, H.Bosman try, S.Harries try and 3 conversions
The game was largely evenly balanced but the speed of the Llandovery backs proved to be decisive as they crossed for five tries. Home outside half Neil Clapham was in outstanding form and claimed two tries, full back Stuart Harries also scored an excellent try. The Rumney pack were full of fire throughout the match and frequently threatened the Llandovery line with Mike Peard, Lotu Ngungutau and Pauli Masoe all being stopped just short after powerful runs. Scrum half Glyn Welsh also broke the home defence but could not quite reach the try line. The visitor's only try came deep into the second half when second row Grant Harrington took a clean catch in a lineout and swiftly fed scrum half Welsh, fly half Tommy Price then switched play back into the forwards with crash ball to Shane McIntosh who slipped a short pass to Paul Harris for the hooker to sprint thirty metres to touchdown under the posts. Price added the conversion to his two earlier penalties but with the Llandovery backs having already done all the damage, there was no way back for Rumney.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "The
score does not really reflect the game, although Llandovery fully deserved the
victory the difference between the sides was the pace of the opposition back
line. We did have a good battle upfront but when their backs cut loose we could
not contain them. We will pull out the positives from this game and learn from
the negatives. We now move onto our home game against Treorchy."
