Scorers for Rumney : D.Willey try, P.Masoe drop goal, T.Price 3 penalties and 1 conversion

Rumney hit top gear and achieved an excellent victory at Pontypool Park. Conditions at the beautiful Park were ideal with clear skies and a wide, firm pitch which suited the visitors' style perfectly and allowed influential outside half Tommy Price to control much of the game with a fine display of tactical kicking. A very strong wind was blowing down the valley and Pontypool had the advantage of it in the first half but nevertheless only led by 10 - 3 at half time through a James Taylor try and a penalty and conversion from fly half Byron Hayward.

Rumney had done well to limit Pooler to such a small lead and started the second period in confident mood with Price using the elements to repeatedly drive the home forwards back deep into their own half. An exquisite drop goal from flanker Pauli Masoe and Price's second penalty reduced Pontypool's lead to a single point when a fumbled pass in the Pooler defence allowed centre David Willey to gather the ball in his own half and sprint sixty metres to score under the posts. Price converted but Pontypool replied on eighty minutes with a Mark Jones try and Hayward's successful conversion seemed to be the match winner. Four minutes into injury time however it was Hayward who uncharacteristically knocked on in his own twenty two and at the resulting scrum referee Lynne Davies suspected the Pontypool pack of deliberately wheeling the set piece. After resetting the scrummage Mr Davies moved to the blind side and found the Pontypool No.6 detatched and pulling the scrum around. Tommy Price cooly and accurately slotted the decisive penalty in the final second of the game.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A very good performance from the squad. We stuck to our game plan and it proved to be very successful. It is never easy playing at Pontypool Park but the team were very focused, realising we were playing a very good side who are doing well this season both in the league and the Principality Cup. We competed in every phase of the game and notably disrupted their lineout ball which caused them a major problem. The Rumney side was captained very well by second row Mike Peard and fully deserved to come away with the three points. I am sure the players will gain huge confidence from this performance. It was very difficult to decide on the Man of the Match award as there were a number of candidates. The eventual recipient was second row Paul Langley. We now move on to our home game against Newbridge on Saturday."

Andy Jones, Chairman Rumney RFC : "After an indifferent first half of the season Rumney are now coming together bigtime and today's performance was superb. I could not fault any player on the pitch so it would be hard to pick a man of the match. We came away with an unexpected but deserved win."

Pauli Masoe, Flanker Rumney RFC 1st XV : "I enjoyed the game because Pontypool Park is a famous place and Pontypool are a very hard team to beat. It was tough in the pack and I was pleased with my drop goal - I took them often in New Zealand, I knew it would go over."
