Scorer for Rumney : T.Price 5 penalties
Scorers for Carmarthen : D.Simpson try, G.Thomas conversion and 2 penalties
Rumney outside half Tommy Price was in outstanding form as he kicked all his side's points to defeat Carmarthen Quins at Riverside Park. The basis for the victory was created by Mike Peard's hard working forwards who restricted the amount of ball the Quins won and starved them of possession, particularly in the second half when the visitors were trying to build on their interval lead. On a perfect playing surface Price landed two penalties but Carmarthen's top points scorer Giles Thomas soon brought his side level with two of his own. The Quins took the lead when Thomas created a gap and put through centre Darren Simpson for a converted try. Price reduced the lead with his third penalty giving a half time score of Rumney 9 Carmarthen Quins 13, but his two further penalties in the second half made sure that the home side ran out victors.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A very solid performance from the squad. We played with great conviction and fully deserved our victory against a very good side who are close to the top of the table. I was very pleased with our ball retention and the way in which we stopped Carmarthen from playing any phased rugby. Our forwards played a huge part in this win, particularly the back row unit who were outstanding. Man of the Match for Rumney was Ffanker Wayne OConnor. We now move on to our fixture with Llandovery."
Gareth Cleaver, full back Rumney 1st XV : "This was a close match. It was a good, quick game and in the end we deserved to win. I was proud of the boys, with five minutes to go things were getting very nervy but the Rumney pack were dominant and kept a tight grip on things to create the victory."
Jim O'Brien, Rumney RFC : "Rumney thoroughly deserved this win. The forwards were absolutely outstanding and it is a pity that a lot of our possession was not turned into points, but Carmarthen Quins are in the top four of the division so this was a superb victory and an excellent performance."
