Scorers for Rumney : Gerald Cox try, Craig Marshman try, penalty try, Matthew Silva try and 2 penalties and 2 conversions
Rumney and Cross Keys produced a thrilling Boxing Day clash with the result only being decided in injury time. The Keys led 9 - 0 thirty minutes into the game thanks to three Gethin Worgan penalties but when their scrum half Llyr Lane was sin binned for a professional foul the balance shifted in the home side's favour. Rumney forward pressure was clearly going to result in a try when The Keys pulled down a rolling maul and conceded the penalty try. This was rapidly followed by an excellent try by Rumney prop Gerald Cox who collected a difficult ball from winger Martin Cawley, sold an impressive dummy and sprinted the remaining twenty five metres to score. Matthew Silva converted both tries but Worgan landed another penalty for Cross Keys and the half time score was Rumney 14 Cross Keys 12.
After the interval two more penalties by Matthew Silva and one from Worgan brought the scores to 20 - 15 but Keys regained the lead when Rumney conceded a penalty try which Worgan also converted. As full time approached Rumney left wing Stuart McIntyre gathered a loose Cross Keys clearance to set up a flowing move which saw Martin Cawley draw in three defenders before passing to prop Neil Hennessy whose storming break pulled in the remaining tacklers and sent winger Craig Marshman over for a fine try. Deep in injury time Rumney No.8 Andrew Grabham capped an outstanding display when, from a disrupted Keys scrum, he drove for the line and set up good possession from which impressive scrum half Gareth Cleaver fed Silva who found acres of room on the blind side and crossed the Key's line for a try which he also converted. This was the last kick of the match and the victory saw Rumney move above Cross Keys in the league table.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A game which we left to the last few minutes to secure a valuable win. I felt we were the better side on the day with our forwards giving us a great platform to work from. The game was a typical Boxing Day encounter with a number of unforced errors and the taking of wrong options but full credit to the squad as they eventually ground out the victory. Man of the Match for Rumney was flanker Wayne O'Connor."
Gerald Cox, prop Rumney RFC 1st XV : "What a Christmas spectacular - an 18st 7lb prop running that far, a good 35 metres and nobody catching him. Martin Cawley took the ball in and as he went down he passed it to my bootlaces. I picked it up off the floor and I think a good team effort kept the Cross Keys players back and it opened up for me. It is a good job it wasn't any further because I was fading fast. After scoring a good try your head is up, but then I got sin binned !"
