Rumney stormed to an exciting opening win of the season in a thrilling eleven try spectacular at Riverside Park. New No.8 Andrew Grabham put in an outstanding performance and collected three tries but it was Dunvant who scored first when winger Nick Jones picked up a loose ball in his own twenty two and ran the length of the pitch to touchdown under the posts, Peter Kaminaris converting. This score was quickly cancelled out when Rumney wing forward Neil Coles made a fine break before putting Grabham over for his first try. Shortly afterwards scrum half Glyn Welsh again opened up the visitors' defence to put full back Christian Wills in for a well worked try. Rumney's third try came when Andrew Grabham picked up at the back of the scrum and deceived the opposition back row to crash over for his second touchdown. Fine place kicking from outside half Matthew Silva gave the home side a 24 - 10 lead at half time. The opening of the second half saw a strong revival from Dunvant with quick tries from Jones, Anthony Rees and Paul Morris which brought them to within two points of Rumney's total but the home side pulled away again when Neil Coles was on hand to cross in the corner and David Willey finished off a good threequarter movement with another corner try. Rumney were now back in the dominant position when winger Martin Cawley snatched a ball from the opposing defence and fed Andrew Grabham who charged over for his third try and the game was sealed with a Colin O'Donoghue try when Gary Cleaver popped up the ball after making an elusive break close to the line.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A nice way to start the season, I felt we dominated for most of the game and created some fine scoring opportunities. We took our foot off the pedal and allowed Dunvant to come back into the game. We must learn from this and be more clinical and finish off the opposition. I was very pleased with our forwards who gave us a great platform to work from, the back row in particular worked very well together. The squad has worked very hard in pre-season training and fully deserved this victory. We must now focus on our next league game against Aberavon. Man of the match for Rumney was Andrew Grabham."

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "We played all
the rugby for the first thirty minutes but then we went to sleep
and allowed Dunvant to come back strongly into the game at the
start of the second half. Our substitutions then lifted the side
and we ran out worthy winners. We put together a lot of creative
moves and this was a very good result for us.

Andrew Grabham, No.8 Rumney RFC 1st XV : "It was a good game. We came back well after a bit of a lull in the second half to secure an excellent victory. I enjoyed the game and scored three tries (more by luck than judgement !) which I hope is an indication of how I played."
