Rumney came out comfortably on top in this local derby betwen Cardiff's two Division One sides. The Wanderers scored a fine individual try when left wing Chester Robinson chased his own high kick along the touchline, gathered the ball and went over in the corner but Rumney soon struck back when good possession at a line out saw hooker Paul Harris and prop Gerald Cox work well together to set lock Michael Peard off on a charging run and from the following ruck, outside half Matthew Silva gave a perfectly delayed pass to winger Ian McIntyre who was unstoppable from ten metres out and who touched down despite the attentions of four Wanderers tacklers. Two drop goals by Wanderers' centre Nick Bellamy gave them a narrow interval lead. The home side's second try also came from a line out and when Cox and Neil Hennessy peeled off the maul at the end of the line it was Hennessy who crashed over to ground the ball. More useful lineout possession also led to Rumney's third try when Nick Stork skilfully gathered a clever Silva chip over the defence and sent out a booming pass to left winger McIntyre who raced in for his second score. Silva converted all Rumney's tries and also kicked a good drop goal and though Garan Treharne scored a last minute consolation try for Glamorgan Wanderers, Rumney were deserved winners.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A much improved performance from the squad. A great deal of constructive debate took place this week and it proved to be very positive. The team played with belief in themselves and fully deserved the win. We still are not the finished article but we are going in the right direction. There were some very good individual performances but more important was the great team effort. Man of the Match for Rumney was flanker Wayne O'Connor. We now move on to our game against Carmarthen next Saturday."
Paul Langley, Second Row Rumney RFC 1st XV : "We trained hard all week and took the field with a good attitude, we wanted to play and we wanted to win. Things went well and boosted our confidence so we are now hoping to string a number of wins together, we could have scored more points today. The scrums, rucks and lines out were good but we still gave away too many penalties, though it was a big improvement. Matthew Silva controlled the game, ran the ball and punished the Wanderers' mistakes. It's brilliant to see the opposition's heads drop when Matthew kicks us seventy metres down the park. Ian McIntyre had a great game too and finished off two very nice moves."
