Scorers for Rumney : Glyn Welsh try, David Willey try, Matthew Silva conversion and penalty

Scorers for Merthyr : Jarrard Lougher try, Gareth Williams try, Stuart Hancox 3 penalties

This was a dour and gritty encounter which saw Rumney unable to haul back a Merthyr lead despite lengthy periods in which they dominated play. Merthyr full back Stuart Hancox landed two early penalties although for much of the game his side were contained deep in their own half. Lock Jarred Lougher scored the opening try for the visitors and they followed it up with an outstanding try wich saw wing Jonathan Hooper start a movement on his own goal line which his forwards and threequarters carried on for the whole length of the pitch with centre Gareth Williams crossing for the score. Rumney gradually worked themselves back into the game and scrum half Glyn Welsh cut through the defence for a try which was followed shortly after by another from centre David Willey, converted by Matthew Silva. In the final minutes the Merthyr defence held firm allowing them to record an important away win.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A very disappointing result. If we had converted all our opportunities into points then we would have won quite comfortably but rugby is about taking the right options and this is where we let ourselves down. We had 65% of the game and should have turned pressure into points. In fairness to Merthyr they showed great resilience to prevent us from winning the game. We will take a long hard look at this performance and then move onto Wednesday's game against Blackwood."
