Scorers for Rumney : Ian McIntyre try, Andrew Boyd try, Matthew Silva conversion, Craig Marshman conversion
Scorers for Pontypool : Stephen John 2 tries, Jonathan Hawker try, Chris Landry try, Byron Hayward 4 conversions and 5 penalties
Rumney started this match with plenty of fire taking on the Pontypool pack up front and getting the best of the exchanges for the first quarter. Pontypool conceded a large number of penalties but the home side were unable to turn their advantage into points and once the visitors settled, outside half Byron Hayward started to control much of the game and was instrumental in setting up his side's first real attack which ended with centre Stephen John crossing for the opening try. The half time score of 0 -13 was not a true reflection of the amount of first half possession gained by the Rumney forwards but the second half saw Pontypool gaining more control and supplying their dangerous back division with plenty of clean ball. It was however a fumble by the Pooler forwards which led to Rumney centre Ian Higgins snapping up a loose ball and flicking a quick pass to winger Ian McIntyre who shook off tacklers and outpaced the defence to sprint sixty metres to score under the posts; Matthew Silva converted. Higgins' elusive running had been causing problems in the Pooler defence throughout the game and he was unlucky to be called back from a try scoring break when the Rumney forwards had been ajudged offside. Hayward's kicking skills and clever passing kept the visitors ahead as he contributed to tries by Jonathan Hawker and Chris Landry and a second from Stephen John. Following a series of penalties close to the Pontypool try line, Rumney scrum half Andrew Boyd jinked through for a try which Craig Marshman converted but with Hayward contributing twenty three points to his side's total score, the visitors finished the match with a comfortable lead.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "We applied great pressure on Pontypool in the first twenty minutes, but did not turn this into points. In this division when you are in scoring range you have to put points on the board. In contrast, Pontypool came into our half three times and scored on each occasion. I thought outside half Byron Hayward ran the show for the opposition and his goal kicking was very impressive. We must now put this behind us and take up the challenge at Newbridge on Tuesday night."
