Scorers for Rumney : Neil Hennessy try, Andrew Grabham try, Matthew Silva conversion
Rumney travelled
west and produced a particularly determined performance but were
again unlucky to lose in injury time. Tondu put the first poin
ts on the board with a penalty by winger Dean
Thomas. The first try came when Rumney No.8 Andrew Grabham drove
for the line and set up a good ruck, scrum half Gareth Cleaver
supplied outside half Matthew Silva who switched the direction
back to the blind side where he found Grabham now in the wing
position and ready to take the long pass. The No.8 evaded tacklers
to score an excellent try and add to his impressive total of touchdowns
this season. Silva converted to give his side a 3 - 7 lead at
half time.
The second half saw a Tondu revival with Thomas landing his second penalty attempt and Nathan Strong crossing for a try. Rumney's second try was another forward effort. Second row Paul Langley took good possession in a lineout and smuggled the ball to flanker Neil Coles who slipped it to Neil Hennessy for the high scoring prop to spin over the line and score. Leading by one point going into injury time, Rumney were drawn into a series of rucks and mauls which drew in a lot of their cover so when Tondu threw out a long speculative pass the visitors had few defenders out wide and Dean Thomas gathered and crossed for the match winning try.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A game which we dominated for large periods but once again did not turn pressure into points when in the scoring range. We played some very good rugby and we must pull out the positives and move forward, we could quite easily have come away with the three points. We now look to our next opponents Merthyr at home next Saturday. Man of the Match for Rumney was Andrew Grabham . Could I take this oportunity to wish everybody a very Happy New Year."
Con Ritchie, Rumney RFC : "We were the better side. It was a good, solid all round performance from the pack but two missed tackles in the centre of the field cost us the game."
