Bedwas succeeded in preventing a Rumney 'double' but had to work hard to avenge their defeat at Riverside Park earlier in the season. Rumney dominated the opening stages and looked as if they would drive their way over the tryline on a couple of occasions but had to settle for a Tommy Price penalty which opened the scoring after twenty minutes. Shortly afterwards, home full back Andrew James levelled the scores with a penalty and coming into rucks from the side cost Rumney two more penalties which James put over before the interval. It was Bedwas who finally created a breakthrough after tight defences had continued to dominate the game. Paul Phillips made an excellent break and put winger Nathan Bressington away for a corner try and this was followed by No.8 Deri Mattravers giving a final scoring pass to scrum half Wayne Bray.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A good performance from the squad, we can pull more positives than negatives out of this game. I do feel that the score did not reflect the game, we took the game to Bedwas and they had to work very hard for the result. Bedwas are a good side with a very strong squad. I was very pleased with the performance of our players who were making their first appearance in First Division rugby. We now look forward to our game with Bonymaen. Rumney's Man of the Match was Mathew Kearle."
Ian Gardner, Coach Bedwas RFC 1st XV : "It is difficult to understand why Rumney are so well down the league table. They gave us a great fight and it took a stiff talking to at half time to get our tactics right eventually."
