Scorers for Rumney : P.Niblett try, T.Price conversion

Rumney suffered a ten try beating at the hands of the Quins at a sunny Carmarthen Park, a markedly different result from when the teams met there only four months ago and on that occasion Rumney won by 26 points. Carmarthen outside half Giles Thomas converted every try, some from very difficult positions, and in doing so established a new divisional record for conversions in a game. Rumney never gave up and battled to the end but when the Quins did put their game together they had far too much pace for the visitors and found plenty of gaps in their defences. Home flanker Alan Mason displayed outstanding ball handling skills and crossed for two tries, fellow forwards Phil Middleton and Justin Hughes grabbed a touchdown each and wingers Josh Freeman and Anthony Rees also raced in for tries. Other tries came from centres Darren Simpson, Deiniol Evans and Paul Fisher, with influential scrum half Steve Wake creating gaps around the fringes and finally crossing for a well worked score of his own. For Rumney, Mark Addis and Christian Wills made penetrative runs from depth but lacked support and their only try came when promising centre Paul Niblett caught the Quins napping with a tapped penalty and dived over at the posts.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "We were up against a very good Carmarthen team that played with great passion and urgency. We just could not get into the game and were starved of any set piece ball, all we had to live off were scraps. Our lineout possession was non existent and our scrum was punished time after time. The squad were taught a fine lesson in support play because the Carmarthen pack gave their backs an armchair ride. For long periods of the game the team had to defend, which eventually opened up our defence for them to score freely. The biggest disappointment for me was the weak attempts made by some individuals at first-up tackles, this will be addressed. I would like to congratulate ex-Rumney Youth player and captain Paul Niblett on his debut for the first team, playing at centre. He played particularly well and scored a very good try. I am sure he will never forget this first game for more reasons than one, he was voted Man of the Match".

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "We were totally outgunned.Rumney is a very, very young side and it is going to take us time to develop following the departure of the quality players who went in search of greener pastures this season. We need time and time is one thing we do not have."
