Cross Keys started this game strongly and moved into a six point lead through two Gethin Worgan penalties. Rumney fly half Tommy Price levelled the scores with two penalties before good smuggling of the ball led to flanker Gavin Lucas crashing over in the corner to give the visitors a lead of 11 - 6 after twenty five minutes. Another Worgan penalty reduced the difference and the half time score was 9 - 11.

Rumney opened the second period with all guns blazing and accurate line kicking by Price kept The Keys pinned in their own half. The outside half added another penalty before flanker Wayne O'Connor was sin binned and against the run of play, Cross Keys were able to create a blind side move leading to Matthew Lewis crossing in the corner for a try which again levelled the scores. Keys then launched their best move of the match and full back Darren Miles cut through to score under the posts ; Worgan converted.

The game did however have a thrilling finale with the Rumney forwards launching a series of attacks which resulted in right wing Chris Arnold chipping through the Cross Keys defence and touching down for a good solo try in the last minute of injury time. Price was unable to convert and The Keys took the points with their narrow victory.

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "This was a 100% improvement on last week's performance and was a game we deserved to win. It was unfortunate that we missed out on turning the opportunities we created into points and three tries went a-begging. When you miss kicks at goal you lose games and on the two occasions in the second half that Cross Keys came into our half they succeeded in scoring tries. The Keys took all their opportunities and we did not take ours. David Smith and Andrew Grabham had excellent games today and Mark Addis put in a fine performance at centre."

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "As the score indicates, this game could have gone either way. The squad delivered a much improved performance and I am sure they will gain in confidence from this. There were many opportunities during the game for us to secure the win, we must look at these and ensure we are more clinical in our next encounter. It was very pleasing to see two former Rumney RFC youth players make their debut in the first team, loose head prop James Harris and replacement hooker Michael Feneck. They made the step up and looked very comfortable. At the other end of the scale veteran prop Dave Smith was awarded with the Man of the Match award. We will now focus on our first home game against Llanharan on Saturday."

Tommy Price, outside half Rumney RFC 1st XV : "This was a 150% improvement on last week. We started with good basics in the rucks, scrums and lines which set up a strong platform to see what the backs could do with the ball. It was dropped passes which caused us to miss tries and in a way we started the season a week late. We take a number of positives from this and in the near future someone is in for a tuning at our hands."
