The local derbies between Rumney and Glamorgan Wanderers are usually very tight affairs but this meeting proved to be the exception with The Wanderers running in seven tries to give themselves an excellent start to the new season. Both sides included six newcomers in their lineup and the visitors started well, but once the home side had settled, the cohesion and ball handling skills of their forwards gave them domination up front and flanker Richard Hodges went over for the first try.
Before half time The Wanderers added more tries by No.8 Emyr Christopher, hooker Mike Bishop and new signing, scrum half Jason Hewlett. Fly half Jason Larkman kicked two conversions. After the interval Rumney made something of a revival with captain Andrew Grabham creating difficulties for the opposition defences but the improvement was hard to sustain and the Wanderers came back strongly with a second try by Hewlett and two from winger Owain Thomas. Former Rumney outside half Matthew Maunder slotted two conversions to give The Wanderers a decisive victory.
Sir Tasker Watkins, V.C., President, Glamorgan Wanderers
RFC : " It was a very enjoyable game, played in lovely
conditions and was a pleasing start for The Wanderers. Rumney
will play much better as the season goes on."
Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary, Rumney RFC : "Today certainly showed how badly we are missing the five forwards whom we lost during the summer. My sympathies are with the coaches and it looks as if it could be a long and difficult season."
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "Not exactly the start we would have liked but in fairness to the Wanderers they played very well and punished every mistake we made. We will take a long hard look at the areas we need to address and move on from this."
