The Principality Cup failed to offer Rumney any seasonal cheer as they exited the competition at the hands of Division One rivals Newbridge. The visitors gained little comfort from the fact that the try with which they started the game proved to be the outstanding move of the match. A scintillating break by centre David Willey saw captain Christian Wills thunder over in the corner in the opening minute but once things settled down Newbridge exerted massive pressure from their strong forward platform to ensure that they moved through into the sixth round.

Following the explosive opening, home side hooker Darryl Williams rounded off a rolling maul with a well executed try and the stronger Newbridge scrummage set up three further tries, two for No8 Geraint Gladwyn and a penalty try. Rumney were unable to gain any real forward control and were frequently forced to turn over possession, the increasingly large gaps in the defence presenting try scoring opportunities for centre Andrew Green and flanker Martin Ackerman. In the second half the visitors replaced their entire front row but despite forcing Newbridge into several errors, were unable to capitalise on any of the subsequent opportunites. Former Rumney flanker Simon Greedy and centre Shane Webley added further tries for the home side, providing Newbridge with a comfortable win and passage into the next round.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "We played against a very big Newbridge pack who dominated the forward exchanges, this gave them a huge platform to work from and they fully deserved the win. Man of the Match for Rumney was flanker Mathew Wood."
