Scorers for Rumney : S.McIntyre try, C.Day conversion and penalty

Rumney made Newbridge work very hard for their victory at the Welfare Ground. Outside half Chris Day opened the scoring for the visitors with a penalty but Newbridge then scored two tries in five minutes. Former Rumney forward Simon Greedy took a scoring pass from Shane Webley for the first try and then wing Huw Lock collected the second, with Jason Williams kicking both conversions. Rumney hit back with an excellent try of their own when a weaving run by centre David Willey led to wing Stuart McIntyre touching down near the posts. Newbridge replied with a try by skipper Damian Cooper. Williams put over a penalty to give Newbridge a 22 - 10 lead at half time and in the forty eighth minute he added another. It was Williams who started the move which resulted in his side's only second half try when he broke away from his own goal line and started an excellent movement which finished with flanker John Bowd crossing. Rumney still came back and Willey made another fine break but was held short of the line and the Newbridge defence stood firm until the final whistle.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "This scoreline did not reflect the game, the squad played with a great desire to win and played some very good rugby. We can pull out all the positives from this performance, including our young squad gaining valuable experience in First Division rugby. Man of the Match for Rumney was flanker Paul Langley. We now look to our next game with Aberavon on Friday night."
