Inspirational outside half Byron Hayward was in excellent form, keeping Pontypool at the top of the Lloyd's TSB Welsh National League Division One with an unbeaten home record and adding to Rumney's worries. The former international ran up thirty three points, comprising two tries, three penalties and seven conversions as Pooler's powerful forward display provided the backs with a stream of clean possession. Once again Rumney started well and went into the lead with a well taken try by captain Christian Wills, converted by Chris Day. They held this lead for nearly thirty minutes until Pontypool set up a series of rucks and mauls which drew in so many defenders that home captain Mark Jones found himself free in unfamiliar territory on the right wing and crossed for his side's opening try. Hayward converted and added two tries himself before scrum half Kevin Ellis touched down under the posts for a second half try. Hayward converted all three tries and although the game was lost, Rumney never gave in and following a successful penalty by Day, Tommy Price took a tapped penalty and put lock Grant Harrington in between the defending threequarters for an opportunist try.

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Perhaps our biggest mistake was going seven points up. Overall we never gave in and tried hard and tackled evrything but Pontypool were too big, too classy and too committed. They had an abundance of class players and when they made changes it did not weaken them but when we made changes it did weaken our side. We had no strength in depth. There has to be concern over the money that is being spent by clubs in this division, if they get promoted where do they get promoted to ? Glyn Welsh was outstanding today and Colin O'Donoghue was impressive too. Referee James Jones kept the game alive, in my view he is one of the most fit referees around and has a good rapport with the players, talking to them rather than at them. Even though we lost by a large margin we were more than happy with his performance."

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "We played against a very good Pontypool side, took the initiative for the first thirty minutes and looked in control. The experience and class of numbers eight, nine and ten for Pontypool then turned the game. We did battle bravely for the full eighty minutes and continued to play rugby but we were no match for them. Man of the Match for Rumney was Glyn Welsh."
