A powerful and skillful second half performance in which they scored five tries, gave Rumney their first win of the season over a shell shocked Bedwas. The visitors had scored tries by three quarters Paul Phillips and Stefan Sankala against three James Palfrey penalties to give them a 9 - 15 interval lead but from the restart Rumney captain Christian Wills breached the opposition defence and sent David Willey away on an unstopable sprint to score under the posts. Minutes later speedy flanker Gavin Lucas charged down a clearance kick and grounded the ball to put Rumney into the lead. The home side was now dominating the forward exchanges and gaining turnover possession at the rucks and mauls when, from the back of a set scrum, No8 Andrew Grabham showed off his ball carrying skills with an outrageous dummy which put him clear through the defence to feed lively scrum half Glyn Welsh for Rumney's third try. Flanker Neil Coles soon claimed the fourth try and it was Grabham himself who scored his side's fifth when a strong rolling maul took him over the Bedwas line, giving the backrow a try apiece. Bedwas No8 Derri Mattravers was sinbinned in the sixty second minute and the visitors challenge was effectively over, Rumney's season having finally taken off in some style.

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Tonight's result was the one we have been playing for in parts of the previous games, in other words we played the right kind of rugby for eighty minutes instead of thirty minutes. At times in the Newbridge, Cross Keys, Llanharan and Beddau games we showed that we can play this standard of rugby and I compliment every player from 1 to 22 on the performance this evening. The pack dominated the Bedwas forwards and I give each Rumney forward five stars. If we can continue playing this style we will climb the table, we may be late starters but for us the season began tonight. It is only fair to say that the flow of the game was helped by the excellent refereeing of James Jones from Bridgend."

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A great performance from the squad, we fully deserved the victory. We played the game at a very intense pace which Bedwas found difficult to contend with. A number of games this season have been lost by a slender margin, this was a victory waiting to happen. We have a very young squad who are cutting their teeth in First Division rugby, I am sure this win will give the players the confidence they need to successfully compete in this division. The Man of the Match award could have gone to a number of players, the main contenders being pack leader Andrew Grabham, flankers Neil Coles and Gavin Lucas along with a number of the threequarters, but the eventual winner was hooker Colin O'Donoghue".

Larry Brincat, Rumney RFC : "Outstanding - the front five did their job and the back row were brilliant. Andrew Grabham, Neil Coles and Colin O'Donoghue showed stacks of commitment, taking them on up front and growing in confidence all the time, they played with all the guts in the world. David Willey is good enough to be playing for Cardiff any day of the week."
