In this try-packed game Blackwood just managed to keep a young Rumney at bay and were glad to hear the final whistle announce their win. Rumney were 28 - 0 down at one point before fighting back in remarkable fashion and scoring five tries. Blackwood dominated the first thirty nine minutes and ran in four tries. Their first try came five minutes into the game when second row Wayne Sims drove over and a slick passing movement sent full back Dean Brown under the posts for their second. Wing Mark McGee scored Blackwood's third try and then Brown got his second touchdown and with Martin Jones kicking all four conversions, the Gwent side led by a very comfortable 28 - 0. Right on the interval Rumney Captain Christian Wills scored an outstanding solo try when he cleverly chipped ahead and won the race to touch down, it was Rumney's first substantial attack of the game and was to prove a turning point.
Soon after the restart No8 Stuart Coles smuggled the ball right through a maul and emerged from the other side to race away for Rumney's second try, James Balfrey converted. With the score now at 12 - 28 Blackwood flanker Lewis Hamer set off on an elusive run and prop Justin Price was following up to score, with James converting. Rumney refused to give in and when Michael Feneck took a quick penalty, it was lock Grant Harrington who sold a huge dummy and raced in for his eighth try of the season. A superb three quarter move saw Christian Wills enter the line at speed to break the Blackwood defence and score under the posts. Balfrey's conversion narrowed the gap to eleven points and in the final minutes Stuart Coles set centre David Willey off on a devestating break from within his own twenty two. Willey linked with Chris Arnold and fine interpassing saw Mark Addis cross for the outstanding try of the night. Now only one more score away from victory, time ran out for the home side and Blackwood clung on for the win.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A very entertaining game which saw Blackwood dominate for the first period giving them a very healthy 28 point lead. Just before the interval we scored a try and the second period proved very different as the squad bounced back and produced some very attractive rugby, I think the visitors were very happy to hear the final whistle, as they just held out and secured the win. Man of the Match for Rumney was Gareth Spain."
Jim O'Brien, Team Manager Rumney Athletic : "After thirty minutes and twenty eight points down, Rumney looked dead and buried but Christian Wills scored a try in the last minute of the first half and things changed dramatically. In the second half we outscored Blackwood by four tries to one, it was a gutsy performance; Michael Feneck came on at half time and had a smashing game and Gareth Spain tried very hard too."
