Cross Keys coach David Rees described his team's victory at Riverside Park as a "mature and disciplined performance" and emphasised the value of an away win in ensuring success in Division One. Rumney never gave up the ghost and equalled The Keys in scoring terms in the second half but it was a match that the visitors were always going to win and demonstrated how much more efficient they have become since the teams met in early September. Rumney started with what has almost become their trademark of a devestating opening try, but within minutes they had conceded a try and had to play catch up rugby for the rest of the game. The home side's try came from a superb break by centre David Willey which led to scrum half Glyn Welsh touching down from a rolling maul with Chris Day providing the conversion but the Gwent side's powerful pack was always in control with back row internationals Andrew Gibbs and Kingsley Jones turning in outstanding performances. Keys were also effective behind the scrum and set up a strong defensive line, their first half tries coming from lock Paul Watkins, flanker Ben Watkins and captain Gibbs, all converted by Gethin Worgan, giving an interval score of 7 - 21. In the second half Cross Keys added a try by prop Ian Evans and Rumney constructed a well taken try for flanker Neil Coles.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "We took the game to Cross Keys and played some very good rugby. Had one or two different decisions been made on the field then we could have seen a different result. Although we lost this game I was very encouraged by the way we played and we must continue to play in this fashion and a deserved result will follow. Man of the Match for Rumney was centre David Willey."
