Rumney succumbed to a speedy Narberth side in this pulsating encounter but maintained their reputation as a tough team to beat, especially at Riverside Park. Narberth were swept aside in the opening ten minutes by the rampaging home pack with second row Grant Harrington and No8 Gavin Lucas collecting tries which owed much to excellent support work by the forwards. It seemed that Narberth were struggling to cope with Rumney's forward pressure and were fortunate to be able to get back into the game by using their exciting back division. The Otters' three quarters made the most of broken play and gradually stretched the home side's defences, repeatedly exploiting weak tackles. Full back Gareth James and lock Jason Jennings went over for tries before a Simon Daniel penalty gave Narberth a lead which they would keep for the rest of the game. James added a second try following a powerful break by winger Nick Jones and shortly afterwards hooker Craig Hawkins crashed over under the posts. Rumney launched repeated attacks but were stopped only inches from the line until prop David Smith squeezed over in the fiftieth minute. Narberth's counterattacking skills proved to be the deciding factor and wingers Nick Jones and Daniel Gravelle rounded off outstanding performances with a try each and Mike Jones adding a try of his own.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "Although we lost to Narberth there was a huge amount off positives that can be taken from this game. The forwards gave a great display, but some poor tackling out in the backs allowed the opposition to punish us in clinical fashion. We will address this situation and move on to our next game. Man of the Match for Rumney was lock forward Grant Harrington."
Keith Eaton, Coach Narberth RFC 1st XV : "A lot of sides will struggle to get a result here. The Rumney pack gave us a torrid time and it was only our ability to make the best from broken play which saw us through."
