An impressive display of fifteen man rugby helped Glamorgan Wanderers to a decisive double over Rumney in a very entertaining match at Riverside Park . The Wanderers play, especially in the first twenty minutes, was of particularly high quality and their relentless support work led to five tries, the first coming from lock Peter Herring after just two minutes. Winger Damien Lawler burst through a tackle for their second before No.8 Emyr Christopher grabbed two more tries and Garan Treharne completed a fine first half performance with an excellent try himself.
To their credit Rumney never gave up and a try by prop David Smith brought them back into the game. Scrum half Glyn Welsh continued in the fine form he has been showing of late and crossed to touchdown, and hard work by forwards and backs led to good tries by centre Stuart McIntyre and flanker Matthew Wood but the Wanderers added three scores of their own, including a spectacular effort from dynamic half back Jason Hewlett, to secure their first league win at Riverside Park.
Shaun Lee. Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "We allowed the Wanderers to build up a good twenty point lead and then we started to play rugby. We caused ourselves problems and were always playing catch up rugby. We lost a player due to poor discipline which we must address. To their credit the squad rallied together and played well, with less players on the park !! Man of the Match for Rumney was Glyn Welsh."
