Unlucky Rumney came closer to beating Tredegar than the final scoreline suggests. They led by a point at the interval but allowed their advantage to slip before putting in a powerful fight back in the closing minutes. Rumney looked quite capable of grabbing the victory with Tredegar desperately hanging on to a 26 - 20 lead. The home side had sufficient skill and power in the pack to keep the visitors at bay and to drive over for crucial forward tries at vital times and they ended on a high note with a breakaway injury time try.
It had all started so differently when, after half an hour, Rumney had coasted to an impressive 20 -7 lead. Lock Grant Harrington snapped up a try after a powerful forward drive by No.8 Stuart Coles, and devestating running by the three quarters created outstanding tries for Mark Addis and David Willey. Willey's score in the thirtieth minute was the result of a brilliant move which started deep in Rumney territory with right wing Stuart McIntyre brushing aside three attempted tackles and feeding the ball back in field.
Tredegar forwards Stuart Jarman, Steve Evans and Karl Jones crossed for tries, two of which were covered by fly half Jeremy Lloyd. Late in the second half Jarman scored a second try and the game was decided by winger Chris Arnold's late breakaway.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "Once again we allowed the opposition back into the game. We played some very good rugby in patches, but then took our foot off the pedal. Once again having a player yellow carded cost us dearly, we must learn to be more disciplined. Man of the Match for Rumney was prop David Smith."
