Scorer for Rumney : C. Day 2 penalties

Rumney claimed the victory in this hard-fought battle in appalling conditions at the Treorchy Oval. The visitors adapted better to the playing conditions, maintaining superior ball control in the tackle area. The Zebras were a powerful force in the first half but indecisive handling behind the scrum cancelled out the work of their forwards. With both sides trying to play open rugby on the heavy pitch, Rumney made fewer mistakes and the lineout work of lock Paul Langley and breaks by flanker Matthew Wood proved to be decisive. It was Chris Day's two second half penalties that separated the sides at the final whistle.

Dave Escott, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Credit must be given to every player and official for surviving the atrocious conditions and succeeding to play for an hour and a half ! Both sides tried to play good rugby and it is important to point out that thirteen of today's squad are former Rumney Youth players. Our forwards were immense today, in the second half they dominated all phases of the game and each and every one of them deserves to be Man of the Match."

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney RFC 1st XV : "A game played in atrocious weather conditions, but this did not deter both sides endeavour and commitment for the cause. We did try to play a far too attractive game in the first half and at half time we changed our game plan to suit the conditions. The forwards must take great credit for this victory and were supported well by their threequarters, our defence was very good. We now move on to our game with Bedwas. Man of the Match for Rumney was prop John Stringer."

Paul Langley, second row Rumney RFC 1st XV : "John Stringer had a superb game today, as did the whole front row. We altered the tactics in the second half and by changing the game we put Treorchy on the back foot. We kept play in their twenty two and collected the penalties. At the interval we said that one score would probably be enough to win and Treorchy hardly got into our half in the second half."

Neil Coles, No8 Rumney RFC 1st XV : "This was a hard game in the tight and in the first half we played too much of an expansive game but in the second half we turned around and played the rugby we needed to. Fortunately we got the penalties which we needed to win the game."
