Rumney held back the anticipated early forward onslaught from the big home pack and good line kicking by outside half Carl Ford and full back Matthew Milsom repeatedly took them back into Blackwood territory. Seven minutes into the game Ford kicked a penalty to put his side 0 - 3 ahead and although Blackwood came back with good handling movements and drives, Ford, Milsom and scrum half Chris Miller pegged them back and the visiting forwards started to claim turnover balls. Two lapses in discipline soon cost Rumney dear when they killed the ball and Blackwood outside half Jeremy Lloyd kicked the penalty, and when Lloyd split the defence and home fullback Gregg Davies won the kick and chase for a try which gave his side an 8 - 3 interval lead.

The second half saw Rumney become more confident at forward and with the pack working closely together, they launched attacks deep into the Blackwood half, gaining more turnovers. In the sixty fifth minute Blackwood fly half Lloyd was sin binned and with Miller moving to outside half, Rumney scrum half Ben Morris kicked his side into an attacking position in the corner where good lineout possession by Michael Kelly set up a five metre scrum. No 8 Carl Barker drove from the base and the play was taken on by Paul Bull before Morris dug the ball out of the ruck and rapidly fed Miller who raced over in the corner to score an excellent try. Centre Paul Niblett's brilliant touchline conversion put Rumney into the lead and with Morris and Miller combining well to keep play in the opposition half, the speed of the visiting pack now forced Blackwood into making costly errors. In a tense last five minutes Rumney's defence and discipline held until Mr Jones' final whistle announced an outstanding, well earned victory at Parc Glanyrafon.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A very encouraging performance from the squad, it's never easy to go to Blackwood and gain a result. We battled for every scrap of ball during the first period and when Blackwood took the lead just before half time the boys showed a great deal of character and fought their way back into the game. We fully deserved the victory with our young forwards eventually overcoming the experienced Blackwood eight.
Rumney's Man of the Match award could have gone to a number of players, the final reciepient being scrum half Chris Miller."

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "A really gutsy victory by a very young side, centre Gareth Bowen is only eighteen, he made his First XV debut in the second half and played particularly well. The forwards may have been outplayed in the loose in the first half but they consolidated in the second half and set up a well deserved win."

Gareth Bowen, centre Rumney 1st XV : "A scrappy game for the most part but it is never easy to get a result at Blackwood and this could turn out to be a very important one. I thought Matthew Milsom and Chris Miller had excellent games tonight."

Chris Miller, scrum half / outside half Rumney 1st XV : "Scrappy play was a problem. When Rumney had the ball in hand we looked sharp but we were too frantic in broken play, we should have concentrated on our skills and taken a step back. Things went well with Ben Morris inside and me at outside half, the forwards kept going and going and then play flashed back to the left and with a good ball from Ben, I only had to crash over for the decisive try."

Peter Tennet, prop Rumney 1st XV : "Well done to everyone for a great win last night !  I'm checking the site all the time for news of how everyone's getting on. Thanks for the mention on the site and I hope to hear from you all soon. Best wishes from Geordie land ! "
