A dream start to the game
for Rumney found flanker Neil Coles crashing through for a try
in the first minute and with Brynmawr making plenty of errors,
Coles very nearly snatched
a
second when he was stopped just short of the line following a
superb break by centre Paul Niblett. It took the home side at
least quarter of an hour to settle but then they took clean ball
at a five metre lineout and drove over for their first try. Outside
half Jason Williams' conversion put his side 7 - 5 into the lead
but within five minutes the Brynmawr hooker Brookes was red carded
by Mr David and the home team faced the prospect of a full hour's
play with only fourteen men. The dismissal however seemed to have
little effect on Brynmawr's performance and they started to put
together some good passing movements with centre Watts causing
problems for the opposition. Rumney's attacking potential still
remained strong with No.8 Carl Barker carving his way through
on long runs. From one such break by Barker, scrum half Ben Morris
gathered the ball, dodged wide drawing in the defence and sent
out a scoring pass to centre Niblett who touched down under the
posts. Having regained the lead, Rumney immediately conceded it
when weak tackling allowed Brynmawr No.8 Craig Meates to brush
aside defenders for a good individual try and give his side a
14 - 12 interval lead.
Five minutes after the restart, visiting full back Matthew Milsom gathered a loose ball and linked with centre Stuart McIntyre, who passed to brother Ian for the winger to shrug off five tackles and thunder over the line for a brilliant solo try. Captain Adam Harding's conversion took Rumney into a lead of 14 - 19 but it was to be their last score of the game and the remaining half an hour saw them leak thirty points. Brynmawr gained more control up front and Meates scored his second try after another forward drive. Within two minutes a devestating break by home full back Arnold set winger Richard Dennington on his way to score in the corner and Brynmawr added three more tries and a Williams drop goal before the final whistle brought a closing total of 44 - 19 in their favour.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A very disappointing result from a game in which we started really well. We took the game to Brynmawr and took an early lead. The game was keenly contested by both sides, just after half time we scored a good try and regained the lead but as the game progressed we picked up some injuries to key players and it knocked us out of our stride. The bigger, more experienced Brynmawr team started to take control of the game and ran out comfortable winners. Rumney's Man of the Match was flanker Carl Barker."
Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary, Rumney RFC : "Ten minutes into the second half and leading 14 - 19, Gareth Bowen sustained a nasty injury and was stretchered off and after that we fell apart. Even when they were down to fourteen men Brynmawr were so big and strong, we couldn't move them in the scrums."
Dave Escott, Rumney RFC : "Where do you start? You would expect a side playing with fourteen men to lose, but Rumney managed to let Brynmawr win. It is a young side which will get better but to stay in this division we do need to win a number of away games. I felt that Carl Barker and Neal Ritchie played very well today."
