Rumney had a dream start when a powerful drive saw prop Dave Bartlett score a try two minutes after the kick off. Carmarthen quickly replied wih a long range penalty from outside half Julian Howells but a brilliant break and chip ahead by Rumney fly half James Balfrey allowed full back Paddy O'Neill to gather and touchdown, extending the visitors' lead to 3 - 10 after eight minutes. Rumney were penalised for coming in to the side of a maul and Howells added a second penalty but with both sides playing attacking rugby it was Carmarthen centre Chris Harries who split the defence and set up his left wing for a corner try. Shortly before half time Harries got his own name on the scoresheet with another fine break, his try putting the home side into a 16 - 10 lead.
Immediately after the break Rumney were penalised for holding on the floor and Howells kicked the goal, but despite a number of attacks led by Carmarthen's No8 Daniel Evans, the visitors' defence held and turnover ball saw left wing speedster Henry Amadife race from inside his own half to score an excellent try and draw the scores closer at 19 - 15. The Rumney defence was looking less secure with Carmarthen hooker Ifan Charles setting up rucks from which his threequarters could exert pressure and that pressure finally resulted in a corner try, converted by Howells. In attack the visiting forwards were still more than matching the home side and props Craig Walton and Bartlett created a powerful forward rush which was finished off with a good try by hooker Peter Tennet. With only minutes left and a close scoreline of 26 - 22, Rumney allowed Carmarthen to dominate a five metre scrum and score an easy try, giving a final score of 33 -22.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We started the game in great style and scored two good tries, but unfortunately we picked up a couple of injuries to key players which disrupted our platform. The squad battled for the whole game and we will pull the positives out of it and move on. Rumney's Man of the Match was tighthead prop David Bartlett."
Peter Tennett, prop Rumney 1st XV : "I enjoyed it, it went well and was a step up for me and I luckily got over for a score. I love it at Rumney and I'm glad of the opportunity tp play some good rugby. Everybody has welcomed me and I feel like part of the family. Ryan Sutton and Chris Jones had awesome games today and all the younger guys stood up and held their own."
Chris Harries, centre Carmarthen Athletic 1st XV : "There were a lot of good points in our performance today, especially the way the front row played. The boys kept together and it was a strong team effort. We have been struggling with injuries and the boys did a good job this afternoon."
