Rumney ran in two tries to the Wanderers' one but a rush of second half penalties allowed the home side to take the spoils in this hard fought local derby. The opening minutes found the Wanderers' giant forwards Wesley Palmer, Daniel Howden and Keith Stewart driving hard at the visitors' line but the defence did not flinch and the danger was cleared. Howden took most of the early line out ball but the Wanderers' attacks came to nothing when they found it impossible to penetrate the Rumney midfield and outside half Adam Harding's probing touchfinders drove them back into their own half. Having weathered the opening attacks Rumney were clearly now settling and posing problems for the Wanderers and when second row Chris Jones set off on a devestating run into their twenty two, Wanderers were forced to concede a penalty which Harding duly put over. Harding was now finding big gaps in the opposition defences and prop Matthew Gee was claiming possession and cleaning up in the loose phases of play. An ankle injury saw Paul Bull replace Chris Jones in the second row. After thirty minutes an excellent end of line leap by Ryan Sutton gave snappy and influential scrum half Ben Morris the chance to launch his three quarters in a movement where centre Stuart McIntyre's delayed pass put full back Paddy O'Neill through a yawning gap and O'Neill's inside flick to Ian McIntyre saw the winger cut through for the opening try. Three minutes later Wanderer's full back Matk Heywood put over a penalty and when their outstanding player, No8 Wesley Palmer, broke from well within his twenty two and took play right up to half way, outside half Chris Baxter was on hand to feed Keith Stewart with the pass which sent the lock away for the try which levelled the scores. Morris's sniping runs and the pack's forward drives kept Rumney moving forward and one promising attack was only stopped by a late block on O'Neill by Stewart which resulted in the Wanderer's try scorer being sin binned. The visitors failed to capitalise on his absence and lapses in discipline led to a number of penalties being awarded for offside, one of which was kicked by Heywood to give Glamorgan Wanderers the lead for the first time and an interval score of 11 - 8.

In the opening minutes of the second half Heywood kicked a penalty and followed it with another ten minutes later. In a scrappy period of play both sides continued to concede penalties and although the heavier Wanderers' pack was unable to break the Rumney defences, they were forcing more offside penalties and with Heywood successfully putting them over, he increased his side's lead to 23 - 8 before being sin binned himself for a high, try saving tackle on winger Liam Macqueline. Scrum half Morris continued to catch the Wanderes sleeping and this allowed John Greedy to make a long, powerful break and set up the threequarter movement which resulted in centre Anthony Jones deceiving the defence and dummying through from twenty five metres to score Rumney's second try and produce a final score of 23 -13.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A typical local derby where both sides played with purpose. Although we outscored the Wanderers by two tries to one, we gave far too many penalties away in crucial positions. We picked up a few injuries which did disrupt our platform but the boys stuck to the task and were in the game to the very end. I was very pleased with most of our defensive platform but a lapse in concentration allowed the opposition to score what turned out to be a full -length of the pitch try. The squad still have lessons to learn but they are all eager and enthusiastic. We now move on to our home game against Beddau. Rumney's Man of the Match was flanker Ryan Sutton."

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Rumney never stopped trying and our defence in our own twenty two was superb. The commitment of this young side is tremendous and if we can avoid injuries we will get better and better. The boys stuck to the task manfully when the Wanderers big pack tried to drive us down."
