From the kick off Llangennech adopted the
tactic of getting into the opposition twenty two and then using
their forward power to dominate possession. This reaped rewards
after five minutes when they forced a pushover try, prop Shaun
Lloyd touching down. The home side repeated this successful tactic
to launch a wave of forward dominated attacks but strong Rumney
defence kept them out with full back Matthew Milsom preventing
two certain tries. After twenty seven minutes Llangennech No8
Jeremy Evans finished off another pushover try and in the thirty
fifth minute the forwards drove over from a line out, hooker Phil
Willock scoring his side's third try. Outside half Mark Jones'
conversion brought the half time score to 17 - 0.
After the interval Llangennech once again asserted forward pressure and then stretched the Rumney defence, allowing winger Wayne Price to cross in the corner. Following a series of five metre scrums, the visitors conceded a number of penalties, from one of which scrum half and captain Davies was able to tap and go over for a try. Jones added the points to give Llangennech a commanding 29 - 0 lead but numerous changes on both sides heralded a better period for Rumney when their pack enjoyed a spell of dominance and good interplay between forwards and backs frequently took play into the home side's territory. Scrum half Ben Morris and wing Phil Corcoran made excellent breaks when they were able to gain possession, and in the sixty fifth minute enterprising play from hooker Michael Feneck, Morris and centre Stuart McIntyre set up prop John Bartlett who burst through for a very good try. Outside half Carl Ford converted to bring the score to 29 - 7.
Llangennech's reply was a sweeping movement which was finished off with a try by Jones who also converted it, but Rumney were still ready to attack and No8 Carl Barker was unlucky not to score following a break by lock Paul Bull. The Rumney forwards were finishing the stronger but more indiscipline led to a penalty which centre Paul Davies ran in for a try. Jones' conversion gave a final score of 43 - 7.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "From the very start of the game the opposition made their intentions quite clear, to kick for position and then use their forward platform. The Rumney pack battled for the full duration but were outplayed on the day by a big well drilled side. There were some good individual performances but collectively we were found wanting. Rumney's man of the match was winger Phil Corcoran."
Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "The conditions suited Llangennech who outweighed our pack and dominated up front. We tried hard and Matthew Gee and Phil Corcoran had excellent games, our heads never dropped and we kept at it to the last."
