On a perfect afternoon in the sunshine at the Lewis Lloyd ground, Rumney were in attacking mood and when centre Chris Jones stole the ball and set off on a series of dummies, he found winger Joey Offside ready and willing to run in the opening try. Narberth hit back and eight minutes into the game had taken the lead with a converted try by captain Simon Daniel, but in response Jones scored a try himself and winger Paddy O'Neill added another following shrewd kicking by outside half Chris Miller. 7 - 15 down, the Otters' Katilimoni Tuipulotu finished off a powerful drive with a well taken try. Rumney launched more attacks with Chris Jones, scrum half Ben Morris, Miller and back row Anthony Jones creating big gaps but Tuipulotu was in fine counterattacking form and although the Rumney defence held out against Narberth's attacks, the bigger home pack was proving difficult to match in the scrums. Eventually a searing break by centre Anrew Bowen sent winger Andy Jones in for a try, Daniel's conversion putting Narberth 19 - 15 into the lead. Rumney back row Paul Bull was in excellent form and shortly before half time he picked up at the base of the scrum, split the defence and linked with Morris who put O'Neill away for an outstanding try.
Leading 19 - 20 at the break, the visitors increased their lead five minutes into the second half when Anthony Jones drove over after a brilliant break by Miller, but the Otters snatched the lead back with a second Tuipulotu try, converted by Daniel. Narberth created another fine try when centre Deiniol Evans finished off a stunning movement but Rumney replied with an excellent touchdown by Chris Jones, Carl Ford's conversion bringing the score to 33 - 32. On the hour the visitors went back into the lead as Joey Offside finished off a wonderful break by Rumney captain Matthew Milsom, but three minutes later Narberth regained the advantage through a Gary Bennett touchdown closely followed by a try for lock Jason Jennings. With the big Narberth pack now spending more time in the Rumney twenty two, it was proving more difficult for the visitors to get into scoring positions, and in injury time Narberth broke out of defence for hooker Craig Hawkins to complete a length of field move which brought an exciting, open game to a close with in a final score of 61 - 37.
