Scorers for Rumney : S.McIntyre try, P.O'Neill try, B.Morris try, L.Barnett penalty and 2 conversions

The opening exchanges were even with Rumney lock Paul Haines taking play to the opposition and outside half Lee Barnett driving them back with accurate line kicking. After eight minutes a binding offence allowed Beddau to take the lead with a penalty goal. Both sides gave away a number of penalties but there was no further score in the first quarter of the game. After twenty minutes Rumney were awarded a penalty on the half way line and a rapid feed from scrum half Ben Morris to Anthony Jones allowed him to give a skilfully delayed pass to co-centre Stuart McIntyre who burst through tacklers and covered the remaining forty metres for the first try of the afternoon. Within minutes Morris had carved another huge gap in the Beddau defence and left wing Ian McIntyre was only denied a try when it was ruled that his foot had touched the corner flag.

For a substantial period the Rumney forwards dominated play and following a scrum on the Beddau twenty two, Morris made a darting run which drew in tacklers and allowed flanker Ryan Sutton to gather and feed Barnett whose clever chip forward deceived the opposition full back and sat up for Paddy O'Neill to race in under the posts for an excellent opportunist try. Barnett converted to give the home side a 12 - 3 lead but after a quiet period the visiting forwards came back strongly and forced a series of penalties near the Rumney line. From one of these penalties they were able to gain lineout possession and drive over for a try which gave a halftime score of 12 - 8.

The opening of the second period was as exciting as the first half had been with both sides counterattacking at every opportunity. A Paddy O'Neill mark started a movement where winger John Colin set up good second phase possession and Rumney captain Stuart Coles, who had been causing the Beddau pack problems all afternoon, drove forcefully upfield and set his threequarters into action. A fine handling movement resulted in Ian McIntyre chipping ahead towards the opposition line but the bounce evaded him and Morris, backing up at top speed, gathered well and touched down under the posts. Barnett's conversion gave Rumney an eleven point lead and a score of 19 - 8. Surprisingly, the home side's defence started to look less secure and increasing confidence in the visitors' pack led to them scoring two converted tries and taking the lead at 19 - 22. Rumney attacks were now noticeably fewer but when they did get into scoring positions, errors allowed Beddau to clear their lines. Barnett put over another successful penalty to level the scores with only minutes to go but in the seventy seventh minute, heavy Beddau pressure resulted in their snatching a match winning try and conversion.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A game we let slip away, after playing some very good rugby. We set out to take the game to Beddau and play expansive rugby. During the opening exchanges we battled for superiority and were able to create a platform for our exciting backs to operate. Turning around at half time 12-8 up we had plenty of work to do if we were to secure a win. We started the second half as we did the first and went into a 19-8 lead, the team then took their foot off the pedal and allowed the opposition to claw there way back into the game. In fairness to Beddau they took their chances very well and secured the win. I would like to congratulate Youth outside half Lee Barnett on his first team debut, he played very well and certainly looked very comfortable. Rumney's Man of the Match was scrum half Ben Morris."

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "I enjoyed the game. They were two evenly matched sides and we didn't deserve to lose, but there you are. Scrum half Ben Morris was devestating, Ryan Sutton had an outstanding game and mention must be made of Lee Barnett, the Rumney Youth outside half who, on his first team debut, played very well indeed."
