In perfect playing conditions and on an excellent surface, the opening exchanges of the game saw Treorchy exerting pressure but being unable to break through the Rumney defences and when Wayne Feneck took possession and drove play upfield, the pattern was set for the rest of the match. A solid front row platform established by Matthew Gee, Michael Feneck and David Bartlett and good recycling in the loose, allowed half backs Ben Morris and Adam Harding to provide a particularly swift and efficient service to the threequarters. A wayward Treorchy clearance kick saw Rumney full back Paddy O'Neill gather well and feed centre Stuart McIntyre who sent left wing Dan Clements flying over in the corner to open the scoring after ten minutes. The home side's back row of Stuart and Neil Coles and Paul Haines was proving difficult to contain and most Treorchy advances were pinned back by clinical kicks from Morris and Harding. The visitors speedy backs did look dangerous on those occasions when they gained possession but they invariably found the midfield blocked by the powerful tackling of centre Anthony Jones and were only able to score through a Matthew Stoddard penalty. The half time score was a narrow 5 - 3.
Within minutes of the restart, indiscipline in the Zebras' ranks resulted in a penalty on their twenty two. Livewire Rumney scrum half Morris tapped and went, Captain Stuart Coles gathered and drove over for his side's second try, converted by Harding. By now the speedy Rumney forwards Chris Jones, Ryan Sutton and Neil Coles were carving large gaps in Treorchy's defences and Ian and Stuart McIntyre also made big inroads whenever they had the ball. Forward domination in loose play resulted in Neil Coles stealing possession on half way and supplying Ian McIntyre with the pass which put the winger free on a clear run all the way to the goal line. Shortly afterwards Harding kicked a penalty to give Rumney a 17 - 3 lead but that was cut back when Treorchy outside half Stoddard took advantage of good lineout ball and crossed near the posts. Stoddard converted his own try.
Rumney's reply was immediate, as close interpassing between Neil Coles, Dave Bartlett and Wayne Feneck saw hooker Michael Feneck crash over for a well taken try. More slick work from Morris and Harding gave Stuart McIntyre possession inside his own half, the centre's devestating break resulted in an over the shoulder pass to brother Ian to complete the touchdown. Centre McIntyre was in action again within minutes, this time gathering a ball on his own twenty two and dummying and pounding his way the whole length of the field for a brilliant solo try which Carl Ford converted. The home side finished the game in high gear with Neal Ritchie and Paul Bull full of running, the final score of 37 - 10 providing Rumney with the ideal start to the season.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A typical 'first game of the season' encounter, both sides tried to play a brand of open rugby but unforced errors made the game very disjointed. The first half proved to be very even but the second half belonged to Rumney. It is always great to start the new season with a win but we will take every game as it comes along. The squad worked very hard for each other and put together some very good rugby, there were a number of players who were in contention for Man of the Match award but the eventual winner was Stuart McIintyre. I would also like to congratulate Rumney captain Stuart Coles who led the team by example. We now move to our next game against Glamorgan Wanderers."
Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "A very, very good first performance of the season from an extremely young side who missed a lot of chances but created many more. Stuart McIntyre impressed in the centre and had an outstanding game. There is a lot of work to do and we will get even better, I mean that."
Stuart Coles, Captain and No8 Rumney 1st XV : "A pleasing start and although we made a lot of mistakes we regrouped and came away with a good victory. There is lots of work to do especially in the ruck area, but we'll go from strength to strength. The Man of the Match was centre Stuart McIntyre."
