Bonymaen opened the scoring after three minutes with a long distance penalty by outside half Anthony Evans and spent most of the early exchanges in the Rumney half. The home side's defences proved effective and soon they were on the attack with hooker Michael Feneck leading the fight back and although Bonymaen's scrum half Graham Alexander successfully kicked his side into strong positions, Rumney were gaining more turnover ball and forcing penalies. In the fifteenth minute outside half Adam Harding kicked a penalty to tie the scores at 3 - 3 and the lighter, more mobile Rumney forwards continued to gain possession and force more errors in the Bonymaen defence. Shortly before half time a loose clearance kick allowed full back Paddy O'Neill to gather and chip ahead, causing confusion in the visitors' twenty two and from the resulting maul flanker Neil Coles crossed for a well taken try. Evans kicked another penalty for Bonymaen giving a score of 8 - 6 in Rumney's favour at the interval.
Eight minutes after the break Bonymaen went back into the lead when an offside descision gave Evans the chance to kick a further penalty, but more effective forward drives from Feneck, Matthew Gee and Craig Walton set up lock Michael Kelly who touched down for Rumney's second try. Bonymaen quickly replied with another Evans penalty but a clever kick ahead and darting run from Rumney scrum half Ben Morris took play back into the visitors' twenty two where continuous pressure eventually led to left wing Ian McIntyre crossing in the corner. Once again Bonymaen came back and a strong forward drive put Dan Jones in for a try which brought the score to 18 - 17 but a home victory was assured when flanker Ryan Sutton cleverly anticipated a quick Bonymaen throw in, intercepted the ball and sprinted over for an excellent opportunist, solo try.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A very good performance from the squad who played with great confidence and put together some very good rugby. We defended very well and stopped a very well organised side from playing the expansive game they are noted for. We outscored Bonymaen by four tries to one and thoroughly deserved the victory. This will give the squad a huge boost as they are all working very hard and needed to see some reward for the work they are putting in. Man of the match for Rumney was flanker Neil Coles."
Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "For once the gods were with us and we ground out an excellent win. We outscored Bonymaen by four tries to one, Neil Coles was outstanding and Michael Kelly worked his socks off."
