The contest between Rumney's light, fast pack and Brynmawr's heavier set of forwards got the game off to an exciting, evenly balanced start with the home side frequently pressing on the visitors' line. In the twenty fifth minute Rumney were awarded a penalty ten metres out and from a set move Michael Kelly charged to within a metre of the goal line. Second phase possession allowed scrum half Ben Morris to start a three quarter movement but when things broke down in the centre it seemed that the scoring chance was lost, then a speculative chip from Captain Matthew Milsom set up Shaun Green and the left wing gathered and crossed for a corner try. Rumney continued to press with centre Paul Niblett, flanker Neil Coles and No8 Carl Barker leading the charge upfield but in the thirtieth minute Brynmawr broke through with Craig Mapp scoring in the corner. Outside half Jason Williams converted from far out but within minutes home fly half Danny Clark replied with a penalty. The still, windless evening was favouring the kickers and shortly before the break Williams added a fifty metre penalty to arrive at a half time score of 8 - 10.

Williams extended Brynmawr's lead early in the second half with a further, long range penalty but Rumney regained the lead when flanker Neil Coles cleverly intercepted a kick, shook off a number of tacklers and slipped the ball to fellow wing forward Ryan Sutton who galloped over the line for an excellent try. As Clark ran up for the conversion the ball toppled over but the outside half quickly picked it up and put over a successful, long range drop kick instead, placing his side back in the lead at 15 - 13. This was short lived however as Williams landed another penalty after Rumney were penalised for holding on the ground and despite more high quality forward play, Rumney gave away penalties in attempts to stop Brynmawr attacks. Williams kicked penalties in the sixty fifth and sixty ninth minutes and the game was decided shortly before full time when Brynmawr's Dale Williams scored a pressure try and Williams added the extra points for a final total of 18 - 26.

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : " This was a tremendous performance by Rumney, once again they gave everything and the only difference between the sides was the boot of Brynmawr outside half Jason Williams. The team can be very proud of the way they performed, and it was a very pleasing debut for Danny Clark at outside half."
