Scorers for Rumney : S.McIntyre 2 tries, L.Macqueline try, C.Ford conversion and 2 penalties

Throughout the first half Rumney had no real trouble containing the big Llangennech pack and even when they were under lengthy periods of pressure, managed to attack out of defence with breaks from Phil Carleton and Ben Morris and an excellent sixty metre thrust by lock Michael Kelly. Outside half Carl Ford kept nudging Rumney into the lead with accurate penalties but it was three minutes into the second period before the first try was created. Full back Paddy O'Neill gathered a loose ball and fed winger Henry Amadife who set up a ruck from which the ball was spun out to the centres and Stuart McIntyre seared through the opposition and covered fifty five metres to score under the posts. Within minutes O'Neill was unlucky not to score himself when he fly hacked the ball seventy metres and was only beaten to the touchdown by a matter of inches. Fifty minutes into the match McIntyre added his second try when he drove on a loose ball, gathered and finished off a fine individual effort.

Strong defence still kept out waves of Llangennech attacks but the home side started to give away penalties which allowed the visitors to keep in touch with the score and they added a corner try when the Rumney defence was finally over stretched. It seemed that Rumney were still heading for a comfortable victory when captain Anthony Jones made a superb break along the right touchline and his expertly timed pass put winger Liam Macqueline in for another try but from the restart Rumney conceded a penalty for an offside offence and Llangennech were able to take play into the corner for a lineout. In the ensuing ruck Rumney again infringed and suffered when Llangennech took an instant tap kick and easily touched down for an unopposed try. The conversion brought the score to 23 - 20 with five minutes left but lost possession and missed tackles gave Llangennech the opportunity to drastically stretch the defence and score the final decisive try in the fourth minute of injury time.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "The squad are playing some very attractive rugby and creating some very good tries but on occasions are trying to attack from wrong areas of the field. We competed very well against a big Llangennech side and at one stage we held a very commanding lead, but due to unforced errors allowed the opposition back into the game. The team must learn from this and become more clinical in their approach. Rumney's Man of the Match was flanker Michael Kelly."

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary Rumney RFC : "Another game thrown away. Leading 18 - 3 at one stage and 23 - 13 late in the game, we contrived to give it away. We never gave up but we have got to learn to close a game down."
