Rumney rattled the Llanharan defence in the opening period with No8 Stuart Coles making deep inroads and winger Paddy O'Neill unlucky not to score from a chip ahead by scrum half Chris Miller. O'Neill was quickly back in the action when he collected a long drop out and fed Coles who charged forty metres to set up a good position near the visitors' posts. From the ruck, Miller got the threequarters into action and a booming pass by centre Paul Niblett found Michael Feneck out wide. Feneck supplied centre Stuart McIntyre with a neat pass and he tore through to open the scoring with an excellent try. Llanharan outside half Mark Roper soon started to control the game but fumbles in the threequarters prevented scores and it was Roper himself who, after twenty five minutes, spun out of tackles to touch down under the posts. Mark Davies' conversion was successful and ten minutes later Llanharan controlled the ball at the base of a scrum for Richard Emmes to pounce for another try, arriving at the interval with a 5 - 12 lead.
The second half started with more Llanharan forward pressure and a try by Nicky Morgan, converted by Davies, was quickly followed by Roper's second. With their backs finding more gaps in the home side's defences and added pressure from No8 Colin Malone, the visitors ran in further tries by Davies, Lee David and Emms and were leading by 5 - 41 with twenty minutes to go. Rumney were still willing to launch attacks but gaining possession was becoming increasingly difficult and Malone powered over for two tries. In the final minutes Roper intercepted a kick and scampered over for his hat trick, and winger Perry added an injury time try to give Llanharan victory by 5 - 63.
Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "We competed very well during the first period and scored a very good try. We turned around at half time 12 - 5 down. The second half belonged to the opposition who exploited some poor defensive work. The Llanharan pack took control of the game which allowed their backs plenty of opportunities which they finished very well. The squad competed well but the opposition was far too powerful."
