Despite the necessity of having passive scrums in this match, it was an all action game which produced exciting tries on a surface made slippery by torrential rain. The first score came after a quarter of an hour when Maesteg winger Grant Epton latched onto a wild, bobbing pass in a threequarter movement and crossed in the corner. Five minutes later British Lion Alan Bateman broke through the Rumney defence and put speedy full back Neil Dixon in for a corner try, the conversion by outside half Mark David giving the visitors a lead of 0 - 12. Rumney successfully repulsed further waves of Maesteg attacks but in the thirtieth minute their defence was stretched and winger Alun Brown grabbed a try, which David converted. Rumney's livewire youth winger Joey Offside was proving difficult to contain and a try saving tackle by Bateman on Offside resulted in the Welsh international sustaining an injury and having to leave the field. Shortly before half time Rumney's other powerful wing Henry Amadife had to depart with a damaged ankle, resulting in the home side having to play the rest of the game with only fourteen men.

The second half started well with both sides playing skillful rugby, Rumney's tackling was excellent and lock Michael Kelly, flanker Carl Barker, hooker Neal Ritchie and centre Paul Niblett all found gaps allowing them to break out of defence. Props Andy McCormack and John Greedy also drove upfield and were only stopped inches from the Maesteg line, but the visitors counterattacked with a brilliant length of the field movement, ending with Brown crossing for his second try and Liam Gadd converting to extend their lead to 0 - 26. From the restart McCormack and Kelly stole the ball from the Maesteg forwards and fed flanker Neil Coles, who linked with his three quarters and smooth passing from Anthony Jones, Danny Clark and Paul Niblett put Offside clear to score and outstanding try.

Maesteg launched further attacks but Rumney showed no sign of tiring and more good tackling from Greedy and Jones prevented scores. The defence was finally broken as visiting flanker Justin Jones touched down and with the game entering the final quarter, Gadd, hooker Chris Purnell and captain Matthew Wareham added tries for Maesteg before Rumney's Offside gathered a loose clearance kick, drew in two defenders and offloaded to centre Stuart McIntyre who in turn supplied Clark with a scoring pass. Rumney's injury time try was followed by the final whistle and Maesteg recorded their first ever win at Riverside Park with a 10 -46 victory.

Shaun Lee, Coach Rumney 1st XV : "A great performance from our depleted squad. The Rumney side played with fourteen men for most of the game, against a side of Maesteg's calibre this could have been a cricket score. Rumney played with great tenacity and scored two very good tries. I was very encouraged by our defensive platform, with the players working very hard for each other. We gave youth team player Joey Offside an opportunity on the wing and he played very well both in attack and defence and scored a very good try. Rumney's Man of the Match could have been given to any player from one to fifteen but the eventual recipient was Joey Offside."

Jim O'Brien, Rugby Secretary, Rumney RFC : "We had to opt for passive scrums because only one of our seven front row players was available and then our right wing Henry Amafide suffered an ankle injury and we were down to fourteen men. For the rest of the game the courage and commitment of the team had to be seen to be believed and it was only in the closing stages that Maesteg really got on top. Not a single Rumney player, from 1 to 15, could be faulted for effort and special mentions must go to Andy McCormack and John Greedy who played their hearts out and youth team winger Joey Offside who tackled superbly throughout, and scored a great try."
